Core examination qualifications
Applicants must generally be at least 17, have completed the 10th grade or equivalent, submit the proper application and fee, and qualify through approved education, apprenticeship, crossover, prior California licensure, or accepted outside experience.
School route
Complete a cosmetology course at a Board-approved school. California's statutory minimum is 1,000 hours.
Apprenticeship route
Join an approved sponsor and complete the required on-the-job and related training. The current program describes at least 3,200 OJT hours over two years plus related training.

Answer conviction and professional-discipline questions accurately and attach the required disclosure forms when applicable.
